New York Route 17

Western Terminus: The PA/NY Border, between Erie and Jamestown.  PA 17 used to continue west into Pennsylvania however it was superseded by the I-86 designation.

Eastern Entrance: The NY/NJ border, at Suffern.  New York Route 17 continues into New Jersey as Route 17.

Length: 396.84 miles

Counties: Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Steuben, Chemung, Bradford (PA), Tioga, Broome, Delaware, Sullivan, Orange

Routing: Route 17 forms the backbone of east-west transportation across the Southern Tier of New York State.  The highway begins at the Pennsylvania Border just east of Erie.  The freeway is designated concurrently with Interstate 86 through Jamestown, Olean, Salamanca, Corning and Elmira.  The I-86 designation peters out at Elmira.  From Elmira, Route 17 dips into Pennsylvania at Waverly, and continues east to Binghamton.  There is a short multiplex with I-81 as Route 17 passes through the northeast quadrant of Binghamton.  East of I-81, Route 17 progresses southeasterly through the Catskills, through Monticello and Middletown, interchanges with the New York State Thruway and heads south into New Jersey at Suffern.
