This page deals with the current Alignment of Highway 6 between Jarvis and Hamilton.  For Pre-1997 data, click here. (Coming Soon)

Highway 6 was downloaded in 1998 to the city of Norfolk County west of Port Dover, its now called Haldimand-Norfolk Highway 6.  Highway 6's routing in Hamilton was also changed in the late 90's, now instead of heading through congested downtown Hamilton.  Northbound, Highway 6's routing followed: Upper James Street,  Victoria Road, King Street, Dundurn Street, and York Road. Heading south, it was York Road, Dundurn Street, Main Street, Wellington Street, and Upper James Street.  Highway 6 currently follows a brand new highway alignment bypassing Hamilton to the south.

Highway 6 information that pertains to the Highway 24 to Hamilton Section:

Freeway:  No.  Both the Hamilton Bypass, and the Caledonia Bypass (which someday will be linked) are both limited access highways, that will be twinned when traffic volumes warrant.

Multiplexes:  None.  Highway 6 is discontinuous along Highway 403 in Hamilton.

AADT (2001): Highest:  23,600 from Airport Road to Alderlea Avenue in Hamilton.
Lowest:  3,350 from Scott Street in Port Dover to Jarvis.

Road Info:  Highway 6 is in immaculate shape for the highways entire distance south of Hamilton.  Traffic volumes are fairly light south of Jarvis (and Highway 3).  Highway 6 is a very typical Ontario highway from Jarvis to the start of the Caledonia Bypass (Argyle Street, south jct) and has much higher traffic volumes then the section south of Jarvis.  The Caledonia Bypass, skirts Caledonia to the west.  It is a grade separated limited access highway, staged for a future freeway.  Highway 6 is a busy four-lane undivided highway from Caledonia to Hamilton.  In November 2004, a new alignment of Highway 6 opened along the south side of Hamilton.  This new highway is limited access, with some grade separations, and a few at-grade crossings.  The Hamilton Bypass (6-New) is built to the absolute highest standards.
