Essex area Highway 401 Construction Images

The MTO is currently reconstructing and widening Highway 401 between Windsor and Tilbury in Essex County.  This page is devoted to chronicling the ongoing changes to the highway through Essex County during this major reconstruction.

Phase 4 - Highway 3 to Manning Road (2007 - 2010)

The Windsor to Manning Road widening is the fourth of five multiyear projects to widen Highway 401 to six lanes between Windsor and Tilbury.  This project is arguable the most complex, as it involves replacing a very major railway flyover and the significant reconfiguration of the Tunnel Route interchange.

Phase 2 - Manning Road to Puce Road (2005 - 2006)

The Manning to Puce Roads contract is the second set of a series of widening contracts that will see Highway 401 six laned from Windsor to Tilbury.  The western portion of the contract (from west of Manning Road to east of 8th Concession Road) was completed late in 2005, while the second half of this contract (from east of 8th Concession road to east of Puce Road) is ongoing in 2006.

 Phase 1 - Highway 77 to Highway 2 (2004 - 2005)

The first project to be completed in the reconstruction and widening of Highway 401 between Windsor and Tilbury was completed from west of Highway 77 to east of Highway 2 (Tilbury West junction) in late fall of 2005.  This construction started in the spring of 2004, and progressed over two seasons.  The construction saw the total reconstruction of Highway 401 through the contract limits, as well as ramp realignments at both the Highway 2 and Highway 77 interchanges, as well as the replacement of the Highway 77 structure over Highway 401.

Highway 77 Bridge Demolition Photos Arranged from oldest to newest:

As part of the Highway 401 reconstruction, the vintage Highway 77 overpass was demolished, and replaced by a new modern concrete beam bridge.  The vintage structure was removed the evening of April 16th, 2005.  The structure was removed before a replacement structure had been erected because the centreline of Highway 401 was shifted northerly a short distance to broaden the highway curve just east of Highway 77.

Demolition starts.  Notice the overhead sign was not removed from the side of the structure. Overhead sign is removed.  Hydraulic jacks begin work to remove bridge span. Work continues on structure removal.  Most of the vintage railings have been removed. All of the railings have now been removed. The bridge starts to crumble.  The span is now disconnected from the northern abutment and is hanging from the southern abutment. The overpass has fallen.  The downed span is further broken up and is removed from the highway surface.
