Interstate 86 (New York) |
Western Entrance: Pennsylvania State Line near Findley Lake Eastern Terminus: At the NY 352 interchange in Elmira Length: 190.26 miles Counties: Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Steuben, Chemung Routing: I-86 begins its trek across the southern portion of New York State at the Pennsylvania Line, just east of Erie and the I-90 interchange where the eastern segment of I-86 ends. The highway proceeds easterly through Jamestown, Olean, Corning, until Horseheads (a suburb of Elmira), where NY 17, which duplexes with I-86 for its entire length, transitions into a divided arterial that has several traffic signals. Over the next several years, the I-86 designation will be extended easterly along Route 17, as more and more of Route 17 is upgraded to interstate standards. Once completed, the I-86 designation will extend as far easterly as I-87 in Orange County, north of New York City. Links:

Two views from the eastern ridge surrounding the City of Elmira. Elmira has a population of roughly 30,000 residents, and is situated along the Chemung River. Residents have slowly been fleeing scenic Elmira as heavy manufacturing and the railway industry have slowly declined in the area. Elmira was first settled as an important transportation hub within the Southern Tier of the State. |
